Progressio International Citizen Service (ICS) volunteers have been involved in encouraging participation in youths’ entrepreneurial activities within the Ungweru catchment area. This has been one way of teaching and encouraging Malawian youths how to fish. .

The sessions have been organized by Ungweru (a Malawian host partner organisation of Progressio) in collaboration with the Opportunity International Bank of Malawi (OIBM). 

Hardley Blair Kayira is a Progressio ICS in country team leader based at Ungweru. He says ‘the objective of the program is to equip the youths with entrepreneurial skills for them to be independent and also teach them how to get, and pay back, loans to the bank’.

Mzuzu OIBM branch transformation officer Mr. Mlinda Mwenda also encouraged the youths to get loans as a way of transforming their lives and getting a step closer to independence. “It is high time the youths learn and promote their savings culture, as it paves a way for individual prosperity,” said Mwenda smilingly who believes youths are leaders of today and not tomorrow.

Ungweru organisation is a Malawian Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) and a host partner organisation for Progressio Malawi. It was established in 2004 and works on programs such as HIV and AIDS, climate change, youth development, child protection and also food and nutrition.
