The previous weeks have, without doubt, been very challenging for the UK and national volunteers. Tiredness was notorious, some even took advantage of the lunch hour to sleep. It was an intense journey, but, in Group 2, we managed to surpass our aims.
Yesterday, we concluded our weeks of work in the community of El Pochote. We have made our respective reparations, like the securing of the aerators, closing the remaining gaps in the chambers and replacing the off-point locks.
The Group 2 volunteers improved the list of instructions, which outline how to use the eco-latrines, as well as making a small and simple comic strip for children to also learn how to use the eco-latrines. The instructions have been laminated and stuck inside each of the eco-latrines (in a space where there is enough light to read them) during a reinforcement session with all of the beneficiary families.
Matthew commented that although to begin with the work was difficult, the productivity of the team was an inspiration! And Group 2 is very happy and satisfied with having completed their part of the target.
Now a little reanimated thanks to a moments rest, we continue working on our complementary activities, for which we, on our last day in El Pochote, travelled around the community to collect materials (sticks, tree trunks, etc.) donated to us by members of the community to help with the construction of our playground at the Modelo de Monimbó School. And today, we began the construction process and publicised our work in and around the area of Monimbó, asking the community for more materials to recycle into something for the children. It was a charming experience drawing the posters in the school area, as the children came out for their lunch break and asked us “what are you doing? Why do you need these things?” and so on, each delighted by the response, as well as the sight of another mini group beginning to carve the borders of the playground and a vegetable patch into the earth. Others set about collecting plastic bottles, returning with great success much sooner than anyone expected. The summer sun provoked rivers of sweat and the diggers created a fog of insurmountable dust as we initiated the building process, but the group was faultless in their endeavor and smiled right through until our own lunchtime when we could chill, dance and laugh together as a family.
This Sunday we will be working on something new to celebrate “Dia de la Mujer” (International Women’s’ day) and we hope to see more success then.
The ‘Knights and Dames of the Eco-Latrines’ also would like to wish a happy birthday to UK volunteer Martin, who is in Group 1, and is someone we all appreciate greatly. Every minute of life is so important, special and valued by those that want to have the most beautiful life.
Al despertar cada mañana seguimos en la aventura
Las semanas anteriores han sido sin duda muy agotadoras para los voluntarios (UK y nacionales), el cansancio fue notorio, algunos aprovecharon la hora del almuerzo para descansar un poco; la jornada fue intensa, pero logramos superar nuestras expectativas como Grupo 2.
Ayer jueves concluimos nuestras semanas de trabajo en la comunidad del Pochote; hemos hecho nuestras respectivas reparaciones como lo son el sellado de los respiraderos, sellado de cámaras y cambio de cerraduras en mal estado.
Las normas de uso de las eco-letrinas fue mejorada por los voluntarios del Grupo 2, a la vez de crear una pequeña y sencilla historieta para que también los niños aprendan la forma más correcta de hacer uso de su eco letrina; dichas normas fueron emplasticadas y colocadas dentro de cada caseta de las eco letrinas logrando brindar el debido reforzamiento a las familias de El Pochote donde como Grupo 2 nos tocó construir.
Matthew comentó que aunque al principio fue dificultoso, la productividad fue una inspiración! Y como Grupo 2 estamos contentos y satisfechos por haber cumplido con nuestra meta.
Ahora un poco más reanimados seguimos dispuestos para seguir trabajando en nuestras actividades complementarias, para lo cual ayer jueves aprovechamos el viaje de regreso (Pochote - Alcaldía de Vara) para traer de la comunidad del Pochote algunos materiales (varas, troncos, etc.) que nos obsequiaron los habitantes de la comunidad para ayudarnos con la construcción de nuestra área de juegos en la escuela Modelo de Monimbó, hoy viernes dimos inicio con la creación de publicidad lo cual fue una experiencia muy agradable porque a la vez que escribíamos conversábamos con los niños que se nos acercaban con algunas preguntas como: “que hacíamos¬?, para que necesitábamos esas cosas?” etc. También otro mini grupo procedió recolectar botellas plásticas, se las ingeniaron tanto que muy pronto recolectaron muchas botellas y entre mucho sudor provocado por el sol por el mes de verano y el infaltable polvo, se dio el inicio de nivelado de tierra donde se construirá el área de juegos y el huerto para la escuela y aunque algunos se lastimaron, las risas no pudieron faltar en el grupo, más aun a la hora del almuerzo que como ya se nos ha hecho costumbre es la hora de chilear, bailar y reírnos en familia.
El día domingo trabajaremos en algo novedoso para celebrar el Dia de la Mujer y esperamos sea otro éxito más.
‘Los caballeros y damas de las eco-letrinas’ le deseamos un feliz cumpleaños a Martin voluntario UK, integrante del Grupo 1, a quien le tenemos mucho aprecio. Que cada minuto de su vida sea tan importante y especial, valorando a los que le quieren como lo más hermoso de su vida.
