An invitation to the UK Consulate in Nicaragua this week allowed for a quick scramble to the market in order to spruce up to be worthy representatives for Progressio. The event was to celebrate the Queen’s birthday and the theme was loosely based upon the Baftas. Programmes such as Sherlock Holmes and Peppa Pig were emblazoned on the walls, alongside other timeless exports such as James Bond.
Clad in a combination of borrowed shirts and clean (ish) trainers, the male representatives of the group tried valiantly to live up to the spectacular standards set by our female counterparts. As clean as a bucket shower would allow us to be, the evening provided an opportunity for volunteers to spread the word of Progressio’s endeavours in Nicaragua. To be mentioned in the Ambassador’s speech and to have a visible presence at the event is testiment to ongoing work Progressio is carrying out across the country. We hope that the chance to interact with some powerful actors of Nicaraguan society will provide greater support in the future for the key principles which Progressio strives for: poverty alleviation, environmental sustainability and gender empowerment through the application of a participatory framework.
Once the Beef Wellingtons, Fish ‘n’ Chips and Fredo bars had been greatfully digested, the attention returned to the project. This week we finalised the design for the recycling centre and presented this to the community of La Sabanita. Also this week we were provided with the opportunity to review our time here since arriving, as members of Progressio Nicaragua visited our project. Communication was the key word of the day as being lost in translation has become a daily reality for the volunteers. Enduring this has posed the greatest group challenge to date; a challenge from which the intense sun allows no restbite. However, setting aside time to be retrospective has highlighted haow far we have come in a relatively short space of time. Communication represents a key component of cultural exchange and the establishment of a new project in La Sabanita is a tangible display of the progress which has been made.

Esta semana una invitación del Consulado Británico en Nicaragua nos permitió una rápida excursión al mercado para arreglar nuestro aspecto y ser representantes respetables de Progressio. El evento fue para celebrar el cumpleaños de la reina y el tema se basó libremente en los BAFTA. Programas como Sherlock Holmes y Peppa Pig fueron lucidos en las paredes, junto a otras exportaciones intemporales como James Bond.
Con camisas prestadas y zapatillas de deporte más o menos limpias, los representantes masculinos del grupo valientemente intentaron cumplir con la elegancia espectacular de las voluntarias. Tan limpio como una ducha con un balde de agua permitiría, la celebración fue una oportunidad de los voluntarios para difundir la vos y los esfuerzos de Progressio en Nicaragua. Ser mencionados en el discurso del Embajador nos permitió tener una presencia visible en el evento a favor de Progressio y su trabajo en todo el país.
Esperamos que la oportunidad de hablar con algunos actores poderosos de la sociedad nicaragüense proporcionará mayor apoyo en el futuro a los principios fundamentales que Progressio se esfuerza: reducción de la pobreza, la sostenibilidad ambiental y el empoderamiento de género mediante la aplicación de un marco participativo.
Una vez que el Beef Wellington, Fish ‘n' Chips y chocolate Fredo (comida muy amada para los voluntarios británicos) habían sido digeridos, volvió la atención al proyecto. Esta semana hemos finalizado el diseño para el centro de reciclaje y esto se presentó a la comunidad de La Sabanita. También esta semana contamos con la oportunidad de revisar nuestro tiempo aquí desde nuestra llegada con miembros de Progressio Nicaragua quienes visitaron nuestro proyecto.
La comunicación fue la palabra clave del día, como estar perdido en la traducción se ha convertido en una realidad cotidiana para los voluntarios. Junto a esto se ha planteado el desafío más grande del grupo hasta el momento, trabajar con altas temperaturas. Sin embargo, podemos destacar cuán lejos hemos llegado en un espacio relativamente corto de tiempo. La comunicación representa un componente clave del intercambio cultural y el establecimiento de un nuevo proyecto en La Sabanita es una muestra tangible del progreso que se ha hecho.
