Alejandra Sophia Rivera is a Progressio ICS national volunteer. She is 26 years old. Born with Spastic Diplegia Cerebral Palsy, this has not been an obstacle for her to achieve her goals and objectives. Sophia graduated with honours from high school with a business qualification, and currently she is in her second year of a Law Degree, at Universidad Cristiana Evangélica Nuevo Milenio, in Catacamas, Olancho. At the end of her first year, she was awarded the top student in her class. In the future, she would like to specialise in Commercial Law, travel abroad, learn languages, and ultimately to be a University Lecturer.
Her family includes her mother and three brothers. Sadly her father passed away four months ago. Sophia, the name she likes to called, found out about Progressio ICS through some friends who work for local partner organisation PREDISAN. As a result, she is now taking part in the ICS programme in Catacamas, and she enjoys sharing tasks and responsibilities with her fellow team members.
Sophia feels very happy in taking part of the programme and enjoys gaining new experiences with the team’s workshops, which she takes part and also to spend time learning with the students from the schools involved in the drug prevention fairs that her team is currently delivering. She also feels that her relationship with the UK volunteers is very positive, and finds them to be very kind and collaborative. She finds particularly interesting when the UK volunteers admire and get excited about the traditions and peculiarities of our culture, some of which the UK volunteers find amusing.
One of the challenges she faced due to her condition was that in one of the workshops she was unable to help a fellow volunteer control the students in class. Due to their impatience and excitement they became unruly, which she found challenging in terms of not being able to support her team member to control them. However, in the end all was fine and they were able to see the comic side of the situation.
All of us from Team Catacamas are happy to have Sophia as a team member, who is an example of someone who has been able to overcome her condition.

Desafíate a ti mismo para cambiar tu mundo
Alejandra Sophia Rivera es una voluntaria nacional de Progressio, una chica de 26 años de edad quien nació con capacidades especiales Parálisis Cerebral Tipo Displegia Espastica, lo cual no ha sido un obstáculo para cumplir sus metas y objetivos. Se graduó de la secundaria en la carrera de Perito Mercantil con reconocimientos de excelencia académica. Actualmente está cursando segundo año de la carrera de Derecho en la Universidad Cristiana Evangélica Nuevo Milenio, ubicada en Catacamas, Olancho. Carrera en la cual el año pasado recibió reconocimiento por el primer lugar de índice académico en su facultad, además le gustaría especializarse en la rama de Derecho Mercantil. Sophia sueña con viajar al extranjero, aprender idiomas y su meta final es dar clases en la Universidad.
Su familia está integrada por su mamá y sus tres hermanos varones, su padre falleció hace apenas cuatro meses. Sophia, nombre por el cual ella gusta que la llamen, se enteró del programa Progressio por medio de una de sus amigas, quien trabaja para PREDISAN. Debido a esto, ahora ella está formando parte de este programa, en el cual nos cuenta se siente muy bien compartiendo tareas con personas solidarias y colaboradoras.
También dice estar muy feliz de estar viviendo nuevas experiencias dentro de los talleres, en los cuales le toca compartir y convivir valioso tiempo de aprendizaje con niños de las escuelas que están participando en el programa. Nos cuenta también que su relación con los jóvenes británicos es muy buena, nos dice que son personas muy amables y colaboradoras. Lo que más le resulta interesante y curioso, es cuando ellos se admiran y entusiasman con peculiaridades de nuestra cultura y costumbres, las cuales a ellos les resultan graciosas.
Una de las dificultades que se le han presentado debido a su condición fué en uno de los talleres ella no pudo colaborar con el control de los niños en el aula. La emoción y la impaciencia de los niños armaron un revuelo en el cual se vio con la dificultad de no poder auxiliar a su compañera para controlar al grupo, el hecho quedo en una cómica anécdota afortunadamente.
Sin duda alguna los jóvenes que conformamos el grupo de Progressio en Catacamas también estamos contentos de tener con nosotros un ejemplo de superación como lo es nuestra compañera Sophia.
