The days go by and the rains have yet to come. We may be approaching the end of the first month of winter, but rain has still not arrived in La Sabanita. For the farmers this is bad news, but for the volunteers, the delay has allowed us to make progress on the seven vegetable patches being constructed in the homes of this community’s neediest families.
The burning sun has been our loyal companion over these last few weeks, and, in search of refreshment in the heat, we have all taken to eating a mango at midday. At Doña Martha’s home, we did things a little differently: at midday she prepared us the most delicious papaya juice, and beneath a mango tree, we chatted with her, who, in spite of her humble situation, revealed a perfect understanding of our responsibilities as human beings towards nature.
Doña Martha, who has two sons and a daughter with her husband, is of the last of the families selected in the community of Romero Cerda. She commented, surprised, that she had never seen anything quite like it, and the idea of producing food in her own yard seemed fun. She had grown mint, coriander and other herbs, but squash or radish they barely ate due to the price. The good stuff comes at a price, she said, laughing.
She said the absence of rain was a worry, too. “It’s our fault it doesn’t rain,” she said angrily, “we chop down trees and don’t replant them. It used to rain a lot more. This draught is down to deforestation". You can’t get much closer to reality than that: climate change is a global problem but most people’s minds are on other things. It’s a pretty bad sign when a tropical country like Nicaragua is being blasted by never-before-recorded temperatures of 40 degrees.
Progressio ICS is looking to do some myth-busting on climate change, and, as well as building vegetable patches for families, will be planting trees in the community. As volunteers, we know these are small steps, but through raising awareness and bringing skills and awareness to this community, we will contribute to improving living standards and protecting the environment.
As Mother Teresa of Calcutta used to say, “we know only too well that what we are doing is nothing more than a drop in the ocean. But if the drop were not there, the ocean would be missing something". With conviction and hope that change shall be achieved, we continue our work for this community and for the families that live there.

Creando conciencia bajos los mangos
Los días pasan y las lluvias se hacen esperar, a pesar de estar terminando el primer mes de invierno, a la Sabanita aun no ha llegado la lluvia, para la zona productora no son buenas noticias, pero para las y los voluntarios el retraso de la lluvia ha permitido avanzar en la construcción de siete huertos familiares en hogares de personas de escasos recursos.
El sol incandescente ha sido el fiel compañero en estas semanas, hombres y mujeres nos hemos visto en la obligación de comernos un mango a media jornada para paliar los efectos del calor. En casa de doña Martha la situación fue diferente, a media jornada nos preparó un delicioso fresco de papaya, debajo de un árbol de mangos disfrutamos de una plática con esta mujer que a pesar de su humildad entiende perfectamente la responsabilidad de los seres humanos con la naturaleza.
Doña Martha quien procreó dos hijos y una hija con su esposo es una de las familias beneficiadas, la ultima del sector Romero Cerda. Sorprendida comentó que nunca había visto algo parecido y que la idea de obtener alimentos de su patio le parece divertida, pues ha tenido hierba buena, culantro y otras especies, pero pipían o rábano casi ni lo consume por su alto costo, entre risas mencionó que lo rico tiene costo.
Comentó que también le preocupa la ausencia de la lluvia con cara de enojo manifestó "Que no llueva es culpa nuestra, a cada rato botamos lo arboles y no sembramos, antes llovía más, esta sequía es por tanto despale". Nada más cercano a la realidad, el cambio climático es un problema mundial pero la conciencia de muchas personas está en otras temáticas. Lamentable es que un país tropical como Nicaragua recientemente presentara temperaturas casi de 40 grados, cifras históricas nunca antes presentadas.
Progressio ICS aportando a mitigar los embustes del cambio climático, además de construir los huertos familiares sembrara árboles en la comunidad, como voluntarias y voluntarios sabemos que son solo pequeñas acciones pero creando conciencia y capacitando a los habitantes de la comunidad lograremos mejorar las condiciones de vida y el estado de la zona.
Como mencionaba Madre Teresa de Calcuta, "A veces sentimos que lo que hacemos es tan solo una gota en el mar, pero el mar sería menos si le faltara esa gota", Convicción y esperanza en lograr grandes cambios, continuamos trabajando en pro de ayudar a la comunidad y las familias que la habitan.
