Now, we’ve all had our fair share of hard work and we’ve all had those days where we thought that nothing could be more difficult. I’ve felt this before, and I could never have guessed I was so wrong. Bio construction, unlike normal construction, requires not only collecting materials from the top of a hill but tireless readjusting to make the product you need. Let me break it down for you.

Wednesday 20 January
Lying in a hammock, I swing drowsily from side to side as a cord hanging from the ceiling brushes my knees. It’s morning, and the other volunteers are adventuring on a mountain, collecting bamboo and clay for our bio-construction project.
The 7 of January marked the first day of orientation for both groups of volunteers. We were incredibly excited to meet each other and interacted with heaps of enthusiasm. In the grand scheme of things, not much time has passed so it goes without saying that we have to make the most of every moment.
The war in El Salvador during the eighties was a bloody one. Every day more than 60 people died in the country. The rate of murders was high, with children among them. There were days in which whole families would die. This former soldier tells us that, one time when they were going to the Guazapa mountain, four of his comrades died in an ambush.
We asked the former soldier where all of this took place. He said that, more often, in the Guazapa mountain, where they fought the guerrilla fighters.
Ecotourism is one of the most popular emerging tourism markets. With the environment in an ever-worsening condition, the tourism industry has sat up and taken notice and directed tourism toward exotic, often threatened, natural environments, especially to support conservation efforts and observe wildlife.

For 10 weeks of this summer I volunteered in the rural village of Santa Marta, department of Cabañas, in the north-east of the smallest country in the region, El Salvador. My time there was characterised by the exuberance and enthusiasm of the Salvadoran people and through my continuous improvements in both listening to and speaking Spanish, I was better able to understand the story of the tiny pueblo and its people high in the humid, forest covered mountains of Central America.
We are in the fourth week of our placement. So far everything we have done has been really interesting, not just for the team of volunteers, but for the community, and for our own personal development. To have new experiences helps us to develop, while also helping us to have a better relationship with our fellow team members.
